Henley Ladies were edged off the top spot on Saturday after a hard-fought 1-0 defeat at home to Wycombe. Despite the loss, the team remains in 2nd place, and with points tight across the league, the race for the top remains wide open.
Goalkeeper, Ela Chamberlain produced a string of outstanding saves throughout the match, keeping the scoreline level until 10 minutes from time. Despite the defeat, her performance was a highlight.
The Henley defence were resolute and worked tirelessly to fend off Wycombe’s attacking threats. Fiona Dunn, Angela Botha, Sophie Pendlebury, Chloe James, Perdy Beard, and Rosie Kemp showed impressive composure and determination. Sophie and Fiona made key clearances to keep the Wycombe forwards at bay, making it clear that Henley’s defensive unit was well-prepared and well-coordinated.
Poppy Williams stood out in midfield, covering every inch of the pitch and making several crucial interceptions while distributing the ball effectively. Charlotte Irving had a significant impact with her clever positioning and creative play. Tilly Costa, Jules Tomlinson, and Delphine Roff all played crucial roles in both defensive and attacking transitions, contributing to Henley’s overall fluidity throughout the match.
Up front, Rosie Wilkinson, Emily Matthews, and Nina Lloyd worked tirelessly to put pressure on the Wycombe defence, creating several chances. Though there were attempts on goal, many were just wide of the mark. Their persistent attacking play showed the team’s commitment, though Wycombe’s defence and goalkeeper were able to hold firm.
Poppy Williams was awarded Player of the Match for her exceptional all-round performance, demonstrating tireless work ethic and influence both defensively and in attack.
An unfortunate loss, but Henley can be proud of their performance. With such strong team spirit and determination, the squad is in a great position to push for the promotion they want.
