It was Henley Ladies 1s first away game of the season traveling to Hampshire facing a new team in South Prem Division 2. Ella Shute had a stellar debut performance but sadly missing Rachel Herbert and Lucy Jean-Jean to illness and injury.
Henley started the first quarter strongly almost scoring within the first minute of the game however, frustrations started to creep in as they could not convert their chances despite the enormous amount of possession. Sloppy passing and unnecessary pressure gave Haslemere the opener before half time due to an unfortunate short corner own-goal deflection.
Half time couldn’t come quick enough. Henley ladies needed to regroup and put a bit more belief in their own performance. Thankfully, starting the second half with calmness on the ball and much improved passages of play. The pressure on the Haslemere defence was relentless as was the amount of short corners. A nicely timed strike by Georgie Metcalfe bought the score level. The forwards continually applied the pressure with excellent play by Emma Jean-Jean, Caitlin Barrass and Georgie Metcalfe, getting rewarded with free hits, long corners and short corners which Henley just couldn’t capitalise on. However, composure was the aim of the game and with 3 minutes to go they finally got the winning goal with another beautifully struck short corner by Georgie Metcalfe taking a small touch by the injector on the way through – however this shouldn’t take away from the play of the match performance by Georgie Metcalfe.
Another 3 points for the Henley side, sitting 3rd in the table. They face Southampton University on the 5thOctober at home 15:00.
