Henley and Amersham played out a dramatic 3-3 draw at Henley Hockey Club on Saturday, a game that featured everything from clinical finishes to questionable yellow cards. It was a match that Henley will feel they should’ve won, but Amersham’s late fightback meant the hosts had to settle for a point they’d rather not have shared.
Henley came out swinging early, with Sam Heaver and Harry Rechner both testing Amersham’s keeper. But it was Ed Foster who opened the scoring with a trademark drag flick from a short corner – a goal that probably had Amersham wondering what they’d walked into. Jonny Taylor doubled the lead soon after, deflecting in another short corner. Things were looking comfortable for Henley, until Amersham decided to remind them that the game was far from over. A clever short corner routine from the visitors made it 2-1, and Henley’s Jonny Taylor picked up a yellow card for a decision that could be described as “a bit harsh” at best.
In the second half, the game turned cagey, and Henley had to fight off Amersham surges. In the 50th minute, Harry Rechner popped up at the back post to finish a lovely ball and put Henley 3-1 up. The uneducated in hockey may well have thought, that’s it, the 2 goal lead made the home side safe, but no - wrong. In the final 10 minutes, the away side scored twice in quick succession, first with a deflected shot and then with a calm finish, to snatch a 3-3 draw from Henley’s clutches.
Henley will be kicking themselves for letting a two-goal lead slip, but they’ll also take solace in the fact that they've now picked up 5 points from their last four games. Next week, though, they’ll be hoping for a little less drama – and a lot more points.
